Challenges Strategic Information Management
Question: Discuss about the Challenges Strategic Information Management. Answer: As mentioned in the case study, the use of technology has enhanced the business of UPS. The automated package tracking system, the company might be able to monitor the packages as they are delivered, as well as en-route the delivery process. With the use of hand-held computers named Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD), the route of the drivers are downloaded and the they are able to follow that route. Moreover, package pickups and deliveries are also facilitated by the use of this device. Using the UPS transaction processing system, transaction logs as well as error reports are generated. Transaction logs list all the online transactions that are made during a day. Error reports highlights the transactions that were found to be erroneous (Beynon-Davies 2013). Using the UPS Business Intelligence system, the prediction of sales report could be generated. With the use of data warehouse and data marts, large amount of data could be stored efficiently, such that analysis of the data, along with easy retrieval could be done easily. Moreover, the customer data could be easily processed as an when required. The technology of Voice over IP (VoIP) is in Internet Protocol that enhances the communication lines. This technology is cost efficient than the traditional telephone lines and hence service could be provided to the customers even at peak hours in a lesser cost. Thu, the operational cost of the UPS is reduced. With the use of information system, the inbound logistics is facilitated, since there is increased control over the inbound logistics with the increase in the visibility. For example the inbound and outbound logistics could be controlled. For operations, the use of information management system could be make the overall system efficient (Galliers and Leidner 2014). For example using information system, the operation of delivery could be enhanced. The sales and marketing is enhanced since the control and visibility of the sales and marketing is achieved. The service is also enhanced. For example, the customers could be handled online. The use of information systems is facilitates the outbound logistics since greater control of the logistics and the supply chain could be achieved.
